Services:
Sunday services at the Octagon take place at 11.00am.
Our services generally take a traditional form, including hymns, readings, time for prayer and meditation, and normally an address. Music is a central part of our worship, and as well as the hymns, we enjoy music from our organ which dates from 1802.
The services are led by members of our congregation, by visiting ministers, or by anyone with something interesting to share with us.
We have a number of special services throughout the year, including a Candlelight Carol Service, a flower communion, a Seder on the Sunday nearest Passover, and an annual Joint Service with our neighbouring Church of England church, St George Colegate.
Services over the next period are:
| 4th July 2010 | Kate McKenna (Octagon Member) | Flower Communion |
| 11th July 2010 | Betty Rathbone (Octagon Member) | 'Who Cares' |
| 18th July 2010 | Revd Joy Croft (Retired Unitarian Minister) | |
| 25th July 2010 | Revd Ray Seal (Lay Pastor at Framlingham Church) | |
| 1st August 2010 | Neville Kenyon (President of the Geneal Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches) |
It may be possible to get hold of copies of previous address, depending on the willingness of their owner to part with them. Please contact us if you have particularly enjoyed or been inspired by a service, and we will try to help.
Sunday club:
Children are very welcome at our services, and at our Sunday club, which is open to all children. Children generally stay for the beginning of the service, and join in or listen to the first hymn, before hearing a story which is geared just for them. Then they leave for their own activities, which are often linked to the children's story, and there's plenty of time to play. The children come back into church for drinks and biscuits at the end of the service.
Children's activities at the Octagon aren't about teaching children our views on the world, but about encouraging them to think about the world independently, and to start on the road to forming their own system of beliefs.
Special services:
As well as our regular weekly services, we can offer services to mark life's big events.
We offer baby-naming ceremonies, weddings and blessings, blessings for same-sex couples, and funerals. We will always work with you to make a ceremony which reflects your own beliefs, and is significant, personal and fitting.
We can also offer other ceremonies which are special to you – reaffirmation of vows, adoption, or a joining together of a stepfamily, for instance.
